# Probe locations

> Where UptimeIO runs your checks from, and how locations are selected

UptimeIO runs every check from probe locations in different parts of the world. Checking from more than one place tells you whether a problem is real and whether it affects everyone or only some users.

## Current locations

| Location | Country | Continent |
| - | - | - |
| Amsterdam | Netherlands | Europe |
| Los Angeles | United States | North America |
| Singapore | Singapore | Asia |

This page is the up-to-date list. Locations may be added or changed over time.

## How locations are used

* Each failed check is repeated from other locations.
* An incident opens only after several locations confirm the failure, so a problem at a single location does not alert you.
* Recovery is confirmed the same way.

See [Understanding incidents](/essentials/understanding-incidents) for the full flow.

## Choosing locations

| Plan | Location selection |
| - | - |
| **Free** | Automatic. UptimeIO chooses the locations. |
| **Pro** and **Scale** | Choose at least one location for each monitor. |

Your selection decides where regular checks run. The confirmation rule above applies whichever locations you select. See [Plans & Billing](/billing/plans) for plan details.

## Locations in the API

Check results report the location as its city name, for example `Amsterdam`. See [Check results](/api-reference/monitors/check-results).
